D.I.Y. Eisenhüttenstadt
The exhibition “D.I.Y. Eisenhüttenstadt” connects last year’s building culture festival “Ready, Set, Go!” at Youth Square with the current urban project of reviving the former Lunik Hotel at Central Square. The workshop focuses on how civil society engagement, supported by art and (commemorative) culture, can specifically contribute to the sustainable and community-oriented revitalization of urban spaces.
The exhibition title was inspired by the graphic novel of the same name by Friederike Kiko and Sophie Marie Schmidt. The two graduates from the Architecture Department of the University of the Arts Berlin observed the events around Youth Square last year and speculatively envisioned its future. The results of numerous workshops, particularly those involving children and youth at Youth Square, will also be presented. We will address how the former Lunik Hotel was brought back into municipal ownership and explore the ideas and wishes local people associate with its future. An installation by Reinder Wijnveld will bring to life the memories of former Lunik Hotel guests through photographs and postcards.
Until the end of September, alongside the exhibition, an event and interview series invites visitors to the museum and various urban spaces. The project is part of Campus Kultur (Open in new tab) – a cultural networking and localization initiative by Burg Beeskow, Oder-Spree District, in cooperation with the KulTuS e.V. (Open in new tab) Association, Märkisch Oderland. The program, supported by the Ministry of Science, Research and Culture of the State of Brandenburg (Open in new tab), aims to identify, stimulate, and meaningfully strengthen culturally charged locations in the region in terms of sustainable development.
