Everyday life evokes memories
Everyday Life Evokes Memories
“Everyday Life Awakens Memory” is a project by the Museum of Utopia and Everyday Life in cooperation with the School of Health and Care Professions e. V. (Open in new tab) in Eisenhüttenstadt.
Under the guidance of cultural geragogist Almut Koch, trainees in nursing professionalization develop memory methods using object-based thematic suitcases. They select objects of everyday culture from the museum’s depot and use these in memory cafés with older individuals with and without dementia and their caregiving relatives. The goal is to enable participation that engages all senses, activates memory on multiple levels, and invites exchange.
The trainees test the thematic suitcases in care facilities in Eisenhüttenstadt and the surrounding area and further develop them in practice. In the future, a lending system is to be established. If you work as a nursing and/or care professional in a care facility and are interested in testing a suitcase with various objects and accompanying instructions, please feel free to inquire at the museum.
In parallel with the use of the suitcases, memory cafés take place at the museum. Here, in small groups, older people, care facility staff, and relatives meet under guidance.
Through interaction with everyday objects from the GDR, they engage in conversation over a cup of coffee and a piece of cake, exchanging their experiences and memories together.
The memory cafés will take place on the following dates:
Mon, 5/12, 10:00–11:30
Mon, 8/18, 10:00–11:30
Mon, 9/22, 10:00–11:30
