Permanent exhibition

The permanent exhibition in Eisenhüttenstadt guides visitors through the everyday life, politics, and society of the GDR in ten rooms. The individual exhibition areas showcase the various aspects of everyday life in the GDR, including family and work, and provide insights into consumption, education, and communication possibilities. Additional rooms explain the system of rule in the GDR, shed light on the so-called “socialist way of life,” and report on the oppositional milieus of the 1980s.

At the beginning of the exhibition, information is provided about Eisenhüttenstadt, the location of the permanent exhibition. All exhibition rooms are interconnected by a “chronology of objects”.

The permanent exhibition combines numerous objects, photographs, and documents with films and interviews that can be accessed at media stations. Background information is available on integrated PC databases for each exhibition theme. Audio guides with selected object stories supplement the exhibition offering.

An accompanying detailed book has been published for the exhibition by Ch. Links Verlag.
